Luis Garcia streched off as Livepool loses again

Sports No Comments »

It was a rather torrid time for Liverpool as they lost not twice to Arsenal in the space of three days but also lost talented mid-fielder Luis Garcia with a serious knee injury. After Saturday’s 3-1 loss in the FA cup Liverpool lost against and this time it was a rather humiliating affair as the Gunners pounded the Merseysiders with six goals to make it nine in all in the two domestic cup games that the Gunners played at Anfeild. But not just the game Rafa Benitez was left with more headaches as his Spanish mid-fielder was stretched off after being introduced as a substitute.

He fell rather awkwardly after a aerial challenge and initial reports suggest that he could be out for the next six months having ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament. Garcia who played at Nou Camp before coming to Liverpool will now be unavailable for selection when the Reds visit the UEFA champions next month for their UEFA Champions league second round fixture.

With the second half the season just about getting into top gear the Spaniard’s absence could prove critical for Liverpool.  Of course now that the Reds are out of both the domestic competitions could mean that the work load could be slightly lesser than that of Premiership rivals like Chelsea and Manchester United. Nevertheless, as the season draws to a close both at home and in Europe Liverpool could be found wanted with the lack of quality of players both on the pitch and on the bench and surely Rafa could do with a Garcia in times crisis.

Michel Platini gunning for UEFA cheif’s post

Legends, Soccer 1 Comment »

michel_platini.jpgOne of the greatest footballers of his him the legendary Michel Platini is now playing on a different turf but just as in playing days he is not afraid to take the situation by the scruff of its neck and force it into the way he wants it and yet all through it manage to look elegant and gracious. As he challenges one of the most powerful positions in world football and certainly the most powerful one in Europe he plans to introduce some very unwelcome yet wanted changes in the way the game is played and run in the soccer crazy continent.

Platini who is in a direct fight with Lennart Johansson, the man who has held the portfolio since 1990, plans to cut down the number of clubs from countries like England, Spain and Italy. The former Juventus mid-fielder believes that there is too much of participation from big soccer nations that thwarts the clubs from smaller nations who get eliminated in the qualifying rounds of the continents premier club competition.

The so G-14 of European clubs including the likes of Barca, AC Milan and Lyon have rejected such a proposition and have made a clear pitch for Johansson. As of now Michel is sticking to his guns and he’s not one to give up until the final whistle goes off. He’s been known to achieve the unthinkable and might just pip the odds to claim the throne. The voting is scheduled for the end of Jan 2007. I’ve got my fingers crossed and I’m cheering on for the French Legend.

The song composed in Spanish has been translated into English below, just as the magical soccer of Maradona trancends the georaphical boundaries this song certainly overcomes the linguistic ones.

Cuartetendo!

Con una cosa en los hombros
Por ser el mejor
Por no venderse jams
Al poder enfrent

Por que el no habra de hacerlo

La fama le present

De misterioso sabor

Zidane’s headbutt inspires Sweatshirt

zinedine_zidane.jpg
Zinedine Zidane might have been one of the great soccer stars to have greatest soccer stars to have graced planet earth but still mortality caught ip with him when he lost all his senses to head-butt Italian defender Marco Matterazzi in the world cup finals to end a glorious career in absolute shambles, The incident might have been one of the lowest sporting points of the year but a Italian entrepreneur is all set to make it a fashion trend in the coming year.

Italian businessman Alessandro Ferrari has developed a new line of sweatshirts that depict two stick figures at the back depicting the shameful incident during the world cup in Germany last year. Millions of soccer fans and others wondered why Zizou had done that and the only thing that they could ask the man with a silk touch on the soccer field was “WHY”

The clothes line would be called “Xqua” for the English “Why” and its French translation “pourquoi” The businessman says that this is a brand to promote peace and his sweatshirts are almost a sold out. He also plans to bring out some accessories like bags and bands after the sweatshirts and some the accessories that could be sold at much discounted prices is believed to be called Red-Card. I know Zizou is great but wonder what kind of peace could head-butts and red-cards would bring on earth, it is utter shame that some cheap men poke fun at men as great as Zidane.

Ronaldhino to be conferred with Spanish Citizenship

Soccer, Sports No Comments »

ronaldhino1.jpg
Ronaldhino is expected to be conferred with Spanish citizenship sooner than later. This would make the Brazilian star to play for Barcelona as a European Union Player. He has reportedly filed in all the required documents and is expected to swear allegiance to the Spanish constitution after which the conferring of citizenship would just be one step away.

Spanish clubs are allowed a maximum of three non-EU players in the eleven and with Ronaldhino now conferred with Spanish citizenship leaves only Samuel Eto as a non-European player. This gives plenty of room for Coach Frank Rijkaard to sign up non-EU players to strengthen the squad in the coming January transfer widow.

Coming back to Ronaldhino he’s been in supreme form this season netting his twelfth goal of the season in the Spanish Premiera Liga over the weekend. Nonetheless, Barca have lost the top billing in the league with Seville now leading the way with a three point advantage though the catalan giants still have a game in hand.

Jersey no. 10 – a legacy and the legend!!!

Legends, Soccer, Sports No Comments »

25 August 1928 might not be one of the most remembered dates in the history of soccer. But it definitely one that goes a long way in making the sport and its players stand out on the world pedestal. The day for the first time saw soccer players walk out wearing shirts or jerseys with specific numbers in a London Derby between Chelsea and Arsenal. And since began the journey of players wearing a number on their jerseys that were to soon become almost synonymous with their identities.

jersey_10.jpg

Primarily worn by the players to helps referees, spectators and fellow-players to identify them from one another the numbers soon become as immortal as the players themselves. A freak coincidence or something divine, it was seen that often it was the best or the most charismatic players who wore the identical numbers.

Soon the numbers became cults in themselves but none more so than the Jersey no. 10. The number became synonymous with greatness and immortality. One had to be the best of the generation to deserve to wear it and once worn it had a legacy to be lived up to. Many have made this jersey their own and enriched the legacy, raised the bar higher for the future. The number continues to invoke awe and magic… cos one who wears it a true master of his trade… an ambassador for his and a legend in the making…
